Ex-Blenheim Blades Martin “Hits” The NHL Record Books

Ex-Blenheim Blades defeseman Matt Martin “hit” the NHL record books this season setting a new all-time record for hits in a season.

Martin, who played for the Blenheim Blades in 2005-2006 set a new NHL record for hits in a season with 374 while playing for the New York Islanders.

Martin, a Junior hockey rookie in 2005-2006 with Blenheim, scored 11 goals and 12 assists in 40 games, and also collected a team high 102 penalty minutes that season.

His record this season, while playing with the New York Islanders, surpasses Cal Clutterbuck’s 356, which was the previous record set in 2008-2009.

Martin, who plays left wing, scored 7 goals, and added 7 assists this season, while collecting 121 penalty minutes. He was also awarded the team’s Bob Nystrom Award which is voted on by the fans each season for leadership.

After playing for the Blenheim Blades, Martin made the Sarnia Sting as an undrafted rookie, before being drafted by the Islanders 148th overall in the 5th round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. After spending one season in the American Hockey League with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, this is Martin’s second full NHL season.
