Ruthven’s Meghan Agosta, who played minor hockey for the Chatham Outlaws and Chatham-Kent Cyclones captured gold at the IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championships Saturday. The gold medal was Canada’s first since 2007.

Teammates this season in Montreal, Agosta slid a pass to Caroline Ouellette, who fired the puck home at 1:59 of overtime to give Canada the 5-4 win over the USA.

If not for Agosta, the game might have been over earlier. Trailing 4-3 with only minutes to go on the clock, Meghan Agosta scored the tying goal, unassisted on the powerplay, at 17:22 of the third period to send the game to overtime.

Agosta also assisted on a Jayna Hefford goal during the second period, to give the former Chatham-Kent hockey player 3 points in the 5-4 gold medal win.

The USA has defeated Canada several times in the last few years, including in the gold medal games at the IIHF World’s in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Earlier in the tournament, it looked like the USA would easily sweep this year’s competition as they crushed Canada 9-2 in the preliminary round.

Agosta finished the 2012 tournament with 4 goals and 4 assists for 8 points in 5 games.
