Championship Day For UCC Lancers
The UCC Lancers won two championships Thursday afternoon. In girls rugby the Lancers, who lost the Kent Final last week, defeated Petrolia to win the SWOSSAA championship.
The Lancers defeated Petrolia 38-10 with tries by Megan Goodhand, who had two, Chelsea Broad, Katrina Heyink, Nathasha Wood, and Hannah Cartier.
“Our girls were really focused tonight on a possession game, and keeping penalties to a minimum so we could stay in control of the game,” said Lancers coach Jeff Phaneuf. “We were motivated to secure this win as means of redemption for our loss in the Kent final last week. The girls played very well and were not assessed even one penalty.”
“We are really looking forward to the challenge of OFSSA and with a focus on staying on the championship side of the tournament bracket, the last 2 years we have been on the consolation side,” Phaneuf explained as his team will travel to Ottawa for the OFSAA championships June 4-6.
In the boys Kent Championship soccer final, UCC defeated the Tilbury Titans 1-0.
Kevin MacDonald scored the only goal for the Lancers in the shutout. The boys team will now advance to a SWOSSAA semi-final game of their own.
