Cougars Battle to Tie With Stampeders

The Senior Varsity Chatham-Kent Cougars faced their toughest competition of the season Sunday battling to a 21-21 tie with the Burlington Stampeders, keeping the Varsity Cougars undefeated with a 2-0-1 record this season.

After falling behind 7-0 to Burlington in the first quarter, the hole got bigger for the Chatham-Kent Cougars in the second as Burlington scored their second touchdown of the game, making the score 14-0.

After regrouping at halftime, the Cougars finally got on the board as Blayne Bechard broke free for a 45-yard touchdown run. Chatham-Kent’s momentum wouldn’t last long however, as Burlington scored again to push their lead to 21-7.

With the game looking grim, the Cougars clawed their way back into the game in the fourth quarter. Bechard scored his second rushing touchdown of the game to kick off the fourth quarter, this time punching in a 7-yard run.

Burlington then pushed down the field and took another shot at Chatham-Kent’s end zone, however, Eric Frappier picked off the Stampeders pass and returned the ball 113-yards for a touchdown to tie the game. Without overtime, the game would end as a 21-21 tie.

In other Chatham-Kent Couars action, the Junior Varsity team suffered a 36-29 loss to the Huronia Stallions, while the Peewee Varsity Cougars were handed a 19-6 loss by the Twin City Predators.
