Cougars Run Wild Against Nipissing
After a long bus ride to North Bay, the Chatham-Kent Cougars Varsity team could have come out flat. Instead, the Cougars ran over the Nipissing Wild to improve to 2-0 on the season with the 40-7 win.
After a Josh Pryor safety in the opening quarter, the Cougars fell behind 7-2 after the Wild ran back a fumble recovery for a touchdown. This however, would be the only lead Nipissing would hold in the game, and it would be the last time they would score.
In the second quarter, Clark Green put the Cougars ahead by kicking 35- and 23-yard field goals, followed by a single point by punting the ball through the Nipissing end zone.
Dan Fox would score Chatham-Kent’s first touchdown of the game punching in a 9-yard run.
After another single, this time by Alasdair Coy, the Cougars led 17-7 at the half.
Tristan Robinet opened the second half in a big way for the Chatham-Kent Cougars, grabbing an interception and running it back 25-yards for a touchdown. With the Chatham-Kent defence putting points on the board, the offense then stepped it up with Wallaceburg’s Lee Purnell scoring on a 38-yard run. Not to be outdone, the Cougars defence struck again as Tanner Emery sacked the Nipissing quarterback in the endzone for a safety, putting the Cougars up 33-7 after three quarters.
In the fourth, Alasdair Coy would score the only points for either team, pulling in a 29-yard pass from Kyle Ross for a touchdown.
The Varsity Chatham-Kent Cougars will hold their home opener next Sunday at 5:00pm at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex as they welcome the Burlington Stampeders to town.
