The girls won their first two games on Saturday against the Stoney Creek Battalion 6-1 and the Georgetown Mustangs 3-2. Courtney Legere, Olivia Lozon, Olivia Hunter, Emmie Timmermans, Emma Doom, and Jocelyn Maryschak scored for the Strikers in game one, while Camille Blain scored twice, and Jillian Hyatt scored the other in their second win.
Their first game on Sunday was a hard fought tie against Stoney Creek Battalion again. Regulation time ended at 1-1 and went straight to penalty kicks. Madelyn Turnbull had the lone Chatham goal in regulation. Chatham won in penalty kicks 5-4 with Erica Anderson making some key saves in net.
They met Stratford in the semifinal which also ended in a tie 1-1, with Camille Blain scoring Chatham’s goal. Penalty kicks ended with both teams scoring all 5 shots, and Courtney Legere scored on the 6th penalty kick for Chatham. Erica Anderson made the final save to send Chatham on to the final where they met Waterloo.
The Waterloo team was stronger and more skilled, and Chatham missed some key chances to score. The Strikers lost to Waterloo 3-1 to come home with second place. Camille Blain again had the only Chatham goal.
“It was the first tournament we have ever been in, and we didn’t know what to expect playing teams like Waterloo, Hamilton, Georgetown,” said coach Neil Anderson. “We knew the competition would be tough and that we were going to be in for our biggest test of the year but it was great to see the girls respond well and it showed that we can compete and challenge for titles.”
