Bantam Cougars Beat Toronto

The Chatham-Kent Bantam Cougars beat the Toronto Jr Argos on Sunday with a 28-0 win. The Argos’ team arrived in Chatham with less than 20 players due to injuries and vacations yet stilled played with tremendous heart.

The Cougars scored early in the contest when quarterback Nolan Ball hooked up with Jake Anderson for a 2 yard touchdown pass on the first drive. The Cougar defence then didn’t allow the team from Toronto to move the ball. When the Cougars took over on offense David Nethersole ran the ball in on a reverse from 8 yards out for his first touchdown of the season. Still in the first quarter the Cougars again struck through the air when Ball hit slot back Mahmoud Ibari in the end zone for a 15 yard touchdown stretching the lead to 20-0 as Owen Dorssers converted on 2 of the 3 touchdowns.

In the second quarter the Cougar defence continued to dominate the Jr Argos. Jermaine Caldwell capped the Cougar scoring in the first half with a 24 yard touchdown run. The only scoring in the second half was a single point on a Dorssers’ missed field goal.

The Cougar defence was strong all day long being led by Austin Miller who had a fumble recovery for the third game in a row and Colin Hoorelbeck who also recovered a fumble. Other strong performances on defence were turned in by Michael Ouellette (who had a fumble recovery), RaShawn Cato, Caiden Segeren, Ricky O’Rourke, Joshua Hoorelbeck, Hunter Migwans, Drew Smith, Alex Formosa and Ken Levesque.

The Cougar offence spread the ball around with Clayton Shreve, Chris Vercauteren and Dillon Beaumont being the leading rushers on the day. Quinn Howlett led all receivers with 2 receptions on the day while Anderson and Ibari had touchdown receptions. Quarterback Ball was 3 of 5 with two touchdown passes and Nethersole who played the majority of the game at quarterback was 2 of 5 passing hitting Kelton Evans and Howlett with passes. The offensive line of the Cougars had a strong game as a unit with exceptional performances by Nathan Champaign, Dillon Johnson, Conner Walsh and Griffith Peltier.

The Bantams have one more game remaining in the regular season and will host the Hamilton Panthers Sunday July 22nd.
