This past week, Maddison Broad who competes with the Chatham Y Pool Sharks set herself apart as the fastest 11-year-old backstroker in the country.
Competing at the 2012 LC Junior Ontario Provincial Championships, along with teammates Tyler Cummings and Carolyn Tran, Broad faced off against more than a thousand of the province’s top swimmers and came out on top in two divisions.
Broad swam away with a provincial championship in the 200 back and 100 back, as well as a silver in the 200 free, bronze in 200 IM, and bronze in the 200 fly.
Carolyn Tran finished 6th in the 100 breast and 7th in the 200 breast, while Tyler Cummings was 7th in the 100 breast.
As well, for the first time ever in the history of CYPS, the 3 swimmers took home 1 of 3 team awards. Chatham swimmers took home the overall top performing team (pound for pound) out of over 70 teams.
This coming weekend Carolyn Tran qualified for Chatham’s first ever attendance at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. She will be competing against the whole Canadian Olympic Team and many other international swimmers. This will be her first experience on the senior competition level.
In 2 weeks, Tran and Broad will be traveling to Calgary to compete in the 2012 Age Group National Championships.
In August, Nicole Johnston and Nicole Depooter are set to compete in the 2012 Junior Provincial Open Water Championships. This is at the same time and place as the 1st Annual World Junior Open Water Championships. Johnston is set to swim the 5K and Depooter will swim the 1K.
