Red Devils Eliminated After Heartbreaking Loss
They fought all season, upset two higher ranked teams, and almost sent the top ranked team in the Western Conference home; however, the Wallaceburg Red Devils Cinderella story fell one goal short as the Six Nations Rebels eliminated Wallaceburg Sunday night.
Wallaceburg jumped out to a two games to one series lead, but after losing Saturday at home 14-12, it all came down to Sunday’s fifth and deciding game on the road. Although Wallaceburg fought hard to get back into the game, Six Nations stole the 5-4 victory, winning the OLA Semi-Final series.
In the opening period of the game, Six Nations hit the scoreboard three times in less than two minutes to take a 3-0 lead into the second frame.
Jordan Durston got Wallaceburg onto the board only 1:55 into the second period, but Six Nations would answer back minutes later. Before the period was out however, Jordan VanDamme scored to cut the Rebels’ lead to two.
As they have through much of the playoffs, the Red Devils came out with added energy in the third period. Branden Lilley scored first to cut the deficit to one goal, before VanDamme tied the game with his second of the game midway through the third.
Only a minute later though, Jacob Bomberry would score the series clinching goal for Six Nations. Despite having nearly ten minutes left on the clock, Wallaceburg could not slip one by Six Nations goaltender Donovan Fliescher.
Wallaceburg held the game close in front of the strong netminding of Brennor Jacobs who made 55 saves as the Red Devils were outshot 60-29 in the game.
Six Nations will now advance to play Akwesasne for the OLA title.
