Senior Varsity Cougars Ousted From Playoffs
The Chatham-Kent Cougars Senior Varsity team saw their season come to an end Saturday after they were ousted from the OFC playoffs by the Burlington Stampeders 42-15.
The Cougars were coming off their best senior varsity season record.
“I’m very proud of this group of Football Players, they are a special group and many of them will be heard from in the future at both the high school and University level,” said coach Jeff Green following the game.
In the first quarter, Lee Purnell scored on a 108 yard catch and run reception, on a pass by Cougars quarterback Kyle Ross. The touchdown gave the Cougars a lead which they would hold into the half. Before halftime, Purnell pulled in another touchdown pass from Ross, this time a 53-yard reception and run, giving Chatham-Kent a 15-9 lead at the halfway point of the game.
As the third quarter began however, Burlington’s offence started clicking and the Cougars would be held scoreless until the final buzzer, as the Stampeders ran away with a 42-15 victory.
Ross threw for 349 yards in the game, while Purnell led all receivers with 6 catches for 190 yards and two touchdowns. Blayne Bechard also had a strong receiving game for Chatham-Kent making 5 grabs for 96 yards.
Connor Martin had a strong game on the defensive side of the ball for the Cougars collecting 7 tackles, while Erich Demars and Matt Willder had 5 each. Tanner Emery had 4 tackles and an interception in the loss.
