Senior Varsity Cougars Pounce on Thunderbirds
After a tough loss last weekend, the Chatham-Kent Cougars Senior Varsity team ended their 2012 regular season on a winning note by shutting out the Forest City Thunderbirds 55-0 on the road.
The win for the Cougars improved their regular season record to 4-3-1, which is the best regular season record at the Varsity level for the Chatham-Kent Cougars since the organization joined the OFC.
After starting the game slowly with only a 13-yard field goal by Clark Green in the first quarter, the Cougars’ offence started producing in the second quarter as the team scored three touchdowns.
Curtis Robichaud scored on a 3 yd reception thrown by Kyle Ross, followed by a long 70-yard catch and run by Lee Purnell. Kyle Ross continued to find the endzone with his receivers throwing his third TD pass of the quarter to Tristan Robinet who pulled in a 30-yard receptioin to make the score 24-0 for the Cougars. Ross went 13 for 21 on the day, with three touchdowns passes and 232 yards in the air.
Following the half, the Cougars continued to run away with the game. Robichaud scored his second touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run, before Green kicked another field goal, this time from 21-yards out.
In the fourth quarter, the Chatham-Kent Cougars offence did not cool off has Kyle Ross punched in a 3-yard touchdown run to start things off. Nathan MacIntyre then picked off a Forest City pass and ran the interception back 48-yards for the touchdown. Jake Lilley finished the Cougars scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run.
The stingy Cougars defence held Forest City off the board in the game, led by Connor Martin’s 5 tackles, and a 2 tackle, 2 interception performance by MacIntyre.
As well, Eric Frappier and Ben Bartlett each recovered Thunderbirds fumbles, while Evan Vaughn, Matt Willder, Josh Pryor, Erich DeMars, and Thomas Van Raay all had 4 tackles each.
The Senior Varsity Chatham-Kent Cougars will now play the Burlington Stampeders in the Ontario Football Conference South Division Semi-finals next Sunday in Burlington.
