Van Herk Medals Twice at Provincial Championships

12 year old Brendan Van Herk celebrated Canada Day Weekend in style when he swam away with Double Bronze Medals at the 2012 Long Course Junior Provincial Championships in Nepean.

The meet was hosted by the Nepean Kanata Barracudas June 28, 2012-July 01, 2012 . Brendan rose to the challenge at this meet when he shaved over three seconds off his previous best time in the 100m backstroke to win bronze in a time of 1:12.94. Brendan also smashed his previous best time when he won bronze in the 200m butterfly, finishing third in a time of 2:37.95. This time qualifies Brendan to attend the Junior Age Group Championships in Calgary, AB July 25-30. Brendan had four more top ten finishes, placing sixth in both the 100m butterfly (1:11.05) and 400 I.M. ( 5:36.78), seventh in the 200 I.M. ( 2:37.95) and ninth in the 200m backstroke (2:38.83).

15 year old Shania Van Herk also qualified for this prestigious meet, and had two personal best swims at the meet, shaving over seven seconds off her time in the 200m butterfly to finish in 2:38.45. Shania also set a new personal best time in the 200m backstroke finishing in 2:31.57. Shania also swam the 50m and 100m freestyle events.

Brendan, Shania, and Justine Van Herk will make it a family affair when they accompany their coach and father John Van Herk to the Canadian Age Group National Championships in Calgary July 25-30.
