Cook, Grubb, Balkwill Win Ontario Baseball Titles
It was a big weekend for local baseball players as Justin Cook, Thomas Grubb and Larry Balkwill both won Ontario titles and are now heading to National Championships later this month.
Justin Cook of Dresden, helped the Windsor Stars win their 5th straight Ontario Senior Elimination title. It took two come from behind wins for the Stars, first over Leaside as they came back for a 5-3 win, and later in another 5-3 win over Strathroy.
Cook hit an RBI single in the final game against Strathroy to give the Windsor Stars the 5-3 lead.
Wheatley’s Thomas Grubb has also been one of the Stars’ key players throughout the season and tournament. Grubb his the game winning RBI single before Cook stepped up to the plate in the final game.
Cook and Grubb will now travel to the Canadian Championships with his Windsor Stars in Prince George, British Columbia from August 23-27 in an attempt to help the Stars defend their Canadian title.
Chatham’s Larry Balkwill, after finishing his summer baseball season with the Haymarket Senators, helped the Windsor Jr. Selects win the Ontario Jr. Eliminations in Burlington.
After setting a new single season home run record in Haymarket, Balkwill continued to show his prowess for the long ball, hitting 3 home runs over the weekend, including a grand slam.
Balkwill will now go to Trois-Rivieres, Quebec from August 16-20. The Windsor Jr. Selects will also be defending a National title of their own.
