Maroons Building From Net Out

After adding big netminder Darien Ekblad earlier this offseason in a trade with Leamington, the Chatham Maroons have continued their trend of building from the net out.

Chatham has added a veteran defenseman, in overager, hulking defenseman Jake Felgal.

Flegal is a 20-year-old defender who stands 6’5″ and has played the past three seasons with the Cobourg Cougars of the Ontario Junior “A” Hockey League.

Last season, Flegal scored 4 goals and added 18 assists for Cobourg in 41 games.

The move to add a veteran goaltender and defenseman will undoubtedly have a stabilizing effect on the young Maroons. Flegal will join a crop of defenseman which last season included Nate Pietens, Steven Szekesy, Brett Berger, Evan Mascaro, Brett Clarke, and Ben Pataki, who are all eligible to return, although it is unlikely all will.

Flegal will also add an element of leadership to the Chatham Maroons as he served as Cobourg’s captain last season.

Ekblad will step in as the Chatham Maroons starting netminder, as it is unsure whether either of last seasons goaltenders, Hunter Johnson or Gianluca Palmieri, will return.

Last season, the Chatham Maroons failed to make the GOJHL playoffs and allowed more the third most goals against in the Western Conference while scoring the least number of goals.
