Minor Midget Cyclones Start Season on a Roll
The Chatham-Kent Cyclones AAA Minor Midgets opened their season with a home and home series against the Elgin Chiefs this weekend. Two great team efforts combined with the superlative net minding of Alex Carrier and Brendan Johnston resulted in 3 of a possible 4 points.
In game one, which took place in Komoka on Saturday, the Cyclones came out with a 7-1 win. Special teams played a major factor with the Cyclones scoring 6 power play goals and killing off several short-handed situations including a 2 men advantage for the Chiefs in the second period.
After the Chiefs opened the scoring in the 1st period the Cyclones responded with 7 goals in the 2nd and 3rd periods.
In the 2nd period Drew Marlatt opened up the Cyclones scoring their only even strength goal with help from James McEwan. Dede Cato then put the Cyclones ahead with an assist from Drew Marlatt shortly afterwards.
The 3rd period scoring saw Jake Reed scoring twice with single goals from Ethan Nother, Hunter Burk and Brendan Ritchie. The 3rd period assists went to James McEwan with 2, Hunter Burk, Matt Murphy, Carter Murphy, Michael McArthur, Sam MacPherson and Steven Funk.
Game two took place at home in Memorial Arena on Sunday afternoon. Once again Special Teams played a major role with all four of the game goals coming on Power Plays. The game ended in a 2 – 2 tie.
Cyclones opened the scoring in the 1st period on a goal from Hunter Burk with help from Matt Murphy and Stephen McIver. The Chiefs answered half way through the 1st with a goal from Travis Konecny.
The only scoring to take place with the second came from the Cyclones with Burk notching his second assisted by Carter Murphy.
With just over 2 minutes the Chiefs tied the game on a power play goal from Josh Coyle.
The Cyclones are scheduled to have two more home games this coming weekend. On Saturday they will host Cambridge Hawks at Memorial Arena at 7:30 pm and on Sunday they meet Lambton Jr. Sting at 4:30 pm also at Memorial Area.
