Sting Look to Secure Second

The Wallaceburg Sting look to clinch second place in First division of the Western Ontario Soccer League, when they host Norfolk on Saturday, September 15th, 5:00 PM at Kinsmen Park. With two games remaining in their season, the Sting need a maximum of three points to secure second spot. This would earn them the right to advance to the Premier division next season.

The Sting enter this contest undefeated at home, and having lost only one regular season game since June 2nd. In their last three outings, all of which were played at home, the Sting have 2 wins & one tie.
They hosted Middlesex on August 17th, in what was the inauguration of their new playing surface and came away with a 2-0 victory. Goal scorers for that game were Taylor McArthur & Jorge DaSilva. Next, they hosted the always tough, London Scottish, on August 25th. Despite having fewer losses than the Sting, the Scots found themselves in the middle pack of the standings, in large part due to their number of ties. This trend continued for the Scottish, with the game finishing in a 1-1 draw, after Sting defender, Mitchell Kraayenbrink, knotted the game up mid-second half.

Most recently, Wallaceburg hosted their London English rivals, a team competing for promotion to the Premier division. The English came out ready to play and made the game very competitive. After Sting striker, Phil Nywening, put the Sting ahead in the second half, the English responded right back with a tally of their own, evening the score at 1-1. Late in the game, Sting midfielder, Mike Foster, caught the English keeper playing a little too far out of his net, and floated a ball overtop him that snuck just beneath the crossbar. Wallaceburg held on for a 2-1 victory.

Due to players gone to away to school, the Sting dressed rec league call-ups Derek Suitor, Dave Foster, & Mason Kraayenbrink last game. Eric Fox will also be joining them this weekend and the team would like to thank them for their continued efforts & availability this season.

Wallaceburg currently has a record of 10-4-2 (W-L-T) for a total of 32 points. They are two points back of first place, London Bosnia. With 9 goals, Sting striker, Phil Nywening is currently one back of the division’s leading goal scorers. The Sting will conclude their season on Saturday, September 22nd, when they host the London Portuguese at 5:00 PM, Kinsmen Park.
