Bantam Fillies Need Shootout In Niagara Tourny Win
In the opening game of the versus Mississauga Chiefs 99, despite having outplayed their opponents, the Fillies ran out of time and dropped their opening game 3-2. Megan Van Mol and Adrianna Long would score the Kent Fillies’ goals.
In game 2 against the Kitchener Lady Rangers, the Fillies once gain outplayed the opposition, but gave up a power play goal in the final minute of the game and had to settle for a tie. Danica Drewery, Long, and Jaden Gall scored for the Fillies in the 3-3 draw.
Facing a tough Toronto Leaside Wildcats team in game three, the Fillies would need to win each of their remaining games to have any chance to advance in the tournament. In order to have any chance of advancing to the tournament finals, the Fillies had to win the next two games. Ally Coutts’ timely goal mid-way through the third period lifted the Fillies to their first win of the tournament, by a tight 2-1 margin.
Playing the Mississauga Chiefs 98 in their final game of the round robin, Kent County waited until the third period to finally find a way to put away their opponents. Three unanswered goals in the third period by Gall, Van Mol, and Miah St. Pierre was too much for the second Mississauga team as the Fillies skated away with a 4-1 win.
With the win, the Kent County Fillies advanced to the finals versus the Kitchener Lady Rangers. Much like the previous game between these two evenly matched teams, Kent County outplayed Kitchener but the score remained tied 1-1 after regulation. Karleigh Murphy had the lone regulation goal.
A 5-minute sudden death overtime period went scoreless as well, leading to a shootout. Haley Smith gave the Fillies a one goal advantage on their final shot. Then, in dramatic fashion, Fillies goalie Kaysey Dorssers stopped Kitchener’s final shot to seal the victory.
