Four athletes from Cobra’s Taekwondo Training Centre competed at the Toronto Open earlier this month at The Variety Village Athletic Centre. This Ontario Taekwondo Association sanctioned event drew more the 1000 competitors over the two days of competition.

Primo Whiteye (11 years old) competed in the 11 to 12 years old yellow to green stripe division. He was unsuccessful in his first match but came back to win his second match earning bronze in this division.

Keegan Kovar (7 years old) competed in the 7 to 8 years old green to blue stripe division. He won gold in the poomsae (patterns) competition and was beat out in the semi finals to finish with bronze in the sparring competition.

Brandon Benoit (9 years old) competing for his first time played in the 9 to 10 years old white to yellow stripe. He dominated his first match winning by point gap 10 -0 ending the match early in the second round. Brandon went onto the finals were he lost a very close match finishing with silver.

Candace Dunn (14 years old) competed in 13 – 14 years old blue to red stripe division. She also ended her first match early in the second round with a score of 12 -0 winning by point gap. She went on to win the semi finals 9 – 3. In the finals it was a very close match in all rounds. Down by 3 points in the final round Candace scores a counter back kick with no time remaining. The other player should have been counted out as she could not stand and could not continue. Due to junior officials in training, the count out never happened even after being protested, leaving Candace with silver.

Candace also competed 4 levels higher than her current blue belt level and played in the 13 to 14 years old black belt division. It was a good learning exprience for her to play in this division and to gain more ring time. She did very well for competing for her first in the black belt division. She lost her first match but was able to keep the score close.
