Mertz Helps Kings Edge Sharks
Dresden Kings veteran Dylan Mertz had a four point performance Friday night, helping the Dresden Kings to a 6-4 win over the visiting Wheatley Sharks.
The first period was a back and forth battle between the two teams, with second year forward Macks Holmes opening the scoring for the Dresden Kings only two minutes into the game. Dan Matoski answered back for Wheatley, before Josh Beatty regained the lead for Dresden, with assists going to Mertz and Alex Schmidt. With time ticking down in the first however, Brian Johnson would equalize the score for Wheatley, sending the game knotted 2-2 into the second period.
After Jon Woelk scored to open the second frame, Wheatley would temporarily hold their only, and last, lead of the game. Dresden bounced back quickly with goals from Jeff Vanrabaeys and Mertz to send the Kings to the third period leading by a goal.
Only 23 seconds into the third period, Macks Holmes scored his second of the game, assisted by Mertz and Taylor Sisson, on the powerplay. Craig Adamson would pull Wheatley within one, but Mertz would put the game on ice, scoring an insurance goal with less than four minutes remaining in the game.
Dresden will travel to Kingsville Saturday night to take on the last place Comets.
