Maroons Take Over First Place With Win

The Leamington Flyers tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Chatham Maroons would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3.
Chatham made the score 4-2 on a goal by Brayden Hopkins at 10:46 in the third period, and Leamington got as close as 4-3 when Nathan Opblinger scored 19:07 into the third period.
The Flyers’ power play was ineffective against the Maroons’ penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.
Chatham could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game.
Chatham also got a goal from Jake Flegel as well. In addition, Chatham received assists from Morris Branden, Ben Pataki, Steven Szekesy, and Sean Myers, who contributed one a piece and Michael Verboom and Brennan Feasey, who each chipped in two.
Leamington kept the Maroons’ goalie busy throughout the game, and Darien Ekblad made 47 saves on 50 shots. The Flyers found themselves short handed often, totaling 24 penalty minutes and allowing six power plays.
Leamington was helped by Jared Dennis, who registered one goal. Dennis scored on the power play 14:03 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Leamington. The Flyers had gotten the advantage when Chatham’s Flegel was sent off for head contact. Eric Leardi provided the assist. Troy Cox also scored for Leamington. Other players who recorded assists for Leamington were Alex Seguin, who had two and Joe Manchurek, Tony Spidalieri, and Aaron Thibert, who contributed one a piece.
Matt Mancina rejected 26 shots on goal for Leamington.
