Brodie Battling on Deep Blue Line
A top four position on the Calgary Flames blueline is no sure thing for Dresden’s TJ Brodie as the defenseman enters another NHL training camp.
Last year Brodie played 54 games, collecting 2 goals and adding 12 assists with the Flames before suffering a season ending concussion.
The year before, Brodie made the Calgary Flames out of training camp but was quickly sent back to their AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat, the same place he has been playing during this NHL lockout.
Unfortunately for Brodie, despite having a strong rookie performance last season, he will still be battling a deep and experienced defense corps not only for playing time, but also for a spot on the opening night roster. Calgary’s top defenders will include veterans Jay Bouwmeester, Denis Wideman, and Mark Giordano as locks. Following the top three, Derek Smith, Cory Sarich, Chris Butler, and Anton Babchuk all bring significant NHL experience to training camp.
Many however, expect the Flames to make room on their blueline for Brodie in order to continue developing toward the future as much of Calgary’s roster is ageing.
While with the Abbotsford Heat this season, Brodie has 1 goal and 19 assists in 35 games. Being with the Heat and entering training camp healthy, and in midseason form should give Brodie an edge at camp.
