Two Wallaceburg residents, brothers Justin Durston and Jordan Durston, are about to suit for the first time together as members of the Iroquois Ironmen in the newly formed professional Canadian Lacrosse League (CLAX).

Both Durston brothers are Wallaceburg Red Devils alumni. Jordan suited up for the Wallaceburg Red Devils last season scoring 52 points in 10 regular season games while being sidelined for much of the season, and scoring 66 points in 13 playoff games. Justin coached the Red Devils, including his brother, in 2009, last playing for the Red Devils in 2006. Last season, Justin played for the Sarnia Beavers Sr.B lacrosse team, his first full season back since 2007 when he was an All-Star for the Junior A Orillia-Rama Kings.

According to Justin, the opportunity to fulfil his dream of playing professionally weighed heavily on his decision to return, and he is looking forward to the opportunity,

“I’m very excited to get the opportunity to play lacrosse at a competitive level again,” said Justin Durston. “Since I was a kid I always wanted to play professional lacrosse, or hockey. Now I’m getting that chance to play at a professional level. It’s not the NLL, but it’s suggested to be the next best thing, and I’m grateful to have this second opportunity to play.”

Justin also said after years of being compared to his brother, he is excited to finally have the opportunity to suit up next to him on the same team.

“I’m looking forward to the competition with him. Through the years we have always debated who would beat who, or who did better statistically, and now we’ll be dressing for the same team. I’m sure the comparisons will continue but we’re really two different players.”

Justin, considers his brother to be more of an offensive player, while he describes himself as a transitional player.

“I know my family is very excited to see us finally play together, as lacrosse plays a big role in our family. I was told a few years back that playing the game with a family member was a great feeling and to do it if I ever was given the chance. Now the chance is here and I’ll embrace it.”

Iroquois begins their CLAX season Saturday January 12 against Ohsweken, before hosting Niagara on Sunday January 20. According to Justin Durston, he’s looking forward to working toward a championship with his brother Jordan, whom he grew up competing with and against.

“I know that he’s (Jordan’s) just as competitive as I am, and when we put that jersey on, we’re going out to do what we can to help our team win, and it’s nice knowing my little brother whom I’ve coached and worked with since he was 2 years old will be right beside me trying to win a championship. I think this will be my most memorable lacrosse season just because of that.”

The brothers are also looking for sponsorships to help offset costs involved in travelling and participating in the CLAX. If you are interested in helping, feel free to email j_durston8@hotmail.com
