High School Extracurriculars May Not Re-Start
With a contract recently imposed via Bill 115 by Ontario’s provincial government, many in the local sporting community assumed that high school sports would be back in action this month.
However, following a recent press release by the OSSTF, it was made clear that teachers will not be resuming sports this month.
Ken Coran, President of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation said that “It is regrettable that
the provincial government has chosen to continue down this path and not respect the rights of education
workers.”
“OSSTF/FEESO members have told their local and provincial leadership that should the Minister of Education impose working conditions on them, removing their ability to have the union engage in free
collective bargaining on their behalf, that they would refuse to engage in voluntary and extracurricular activities. They further voted in favour of a day of action in protest.”
The day of protest is scheduled for Wednesday, January 16, while elementary schools will be protesting today, January 11.
More than 100 games from volleyball, curling, hockey, and basketball have been cancelled since December’s ceasing of extracurriculars in Chatham-Kent and across the Province.
