Jasmin Helps Lakers Edge Nearer to Playoffs

One point is all that separates the Wallaceburg Lakers from securing a playoff spot. Wallaceburg, following an 8-6 win over the Mooretown Flags Saturday night, now sit 5-points ahead of last place Kingsville.

Kingsville has only three games remaining, meaning they would need to win every game, without Wallaceburg picking up a point in their final games.

Saturday in Mooretown, Wallaceburg fell behind 2-0 quickly after Dan Lumley and Jeff Schroeter scored in the opening half of the first period. Wallaceburg however, bounced back quickly with Scott Lubbers finding the back of the net twice, and Sam Jasmin scoring. Mooretown would add another, sending the teams to the second period tied at three.

In the second frame, midseason acquisition Brennan Rainey scored to give Wallaceburg the lead. After Mooretown scored twice, Jake Carter slid one by the Mooretown netminder on the powerplay to knot the game at 6-6.

Justin Whitson scored to open the third period, but Mooretown’s Jeff Schroeter capped off his hat trick to tie the game yet again. Passing the midway mark of the third, Jake Carter scored his second of the game, which would stand as the game’s eventual winner. With time ticking down, Sam Jasmin would slide one into the empty net to make the score 8-6 for Wallaceburg.

Jasmin finished the game with 2 goals and 3 assists. After scoring twice and adding 2 assists last game, Jasmin now has an incredible 9-points in 2 games for the Wallaceburg Lakers. Scott Lubbers finished the game with 4 points, including 2 goals for the Lakers.

Wallaceburg has two tough games remaining to prepare themselves for the Great Lakes Junior C playoffs, facing the Belle River Canadiens and Wheatley Sharks.

In other local Junior C action, the Wheatley Sharks defeated the Kingsville Comets 6-2. Riley Babkirk led the charge for Wheatley scoring 2 goals and adding an assist.

It’s all about the second season. The Lakers just need to get in and then concentrate on that first round.
