Stars Shoot Down Maroons

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the St. Thomas Stars defeated the Chatham Maroons in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout. Chatham’s shootout goal was scored by Eric Palazzolo. In addition to the clincher, St. Thomas got a shootout goal from Colin Mooney.
The Stars’ penalty kill excelled, as St. Thomas gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

In a losing effort, the Maroons were led by Brennan Feasey, who racked up two goals. Feasey scored the first of his two goals at 19:47 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Chatham. Steven Szekesy provided the assist. Feasey’s next tally made the score 3-2 Chatham with 3:16 left in the second period. Michael Verboom assisted on the tally.

The Stars stifled Chatham’s power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. St. Thomas kept the Maroons’ goalie busy throughout the game, and Darien Ekblad made 31 saves on 36 shots.

The Stars were helped by Drew Collinson, who had one goal. Collinson scored 12:00 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Scott Mitchell provided the assist. St. Thomas also got a goal from Ian MacDonald as well. More assists for St. Thomas came via Ryan Hamelin, Kevin Zacharuk, Mike Iacocca, Michael Lucifora, and Reid Oliver, who each chipped in one.

Chatham excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. St. Thomas was unable to stop the Maroons from sending pucks towards the net, and Chatham eventually piled up 35 shots on goal.

Chatham additionally got points from Verboom, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Brayden Hopkins also scored for Chatham. In addition, Chatham received assists from Trevor Richardson, who had two and Nate Pietens, Connor Doran, and Evan Mascaro, who contributed one a piece.

Devin Golets rejected 31 shots on goal for the Stars. St. Thomas incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. The Maroons incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
