Maroons Powerplay Sparks Comeback Win

The Chatham Maroons found themselves in a hole early against St. Thomas Thursday night, but a flurry of powerplay goals in the second period helped them cap a 7-4 comeback win over the Stars.

After falling behind 3-0 at the end of the first period Eric Palazzolo got Chatham on the board with an even strength marker three minutes into the second period.

Chatham’s powerplay then took over scoring three consecutive goals from Branden Morris, Palazzolo, and Sean Myers to help Chatham bounce back to a 4-3 lead. Before the period was out, the two teams would trade goals again, with Chatham’s fifth of the game coming from Blake Blondeel to give the Maroons the edge heading to the third.

In the final frame, Brennan Feasey scored an insurance marker, before Michael Verboom slid one into the empty net to cap off an impressive comeback win.

Verboom finished the game with a goal and 3 assists, while Feasey and Palazzolo each had 3 points nights. Scott Tricker, after looking shaky in the first period, bounced back to put in a solid performance stoppnig 43 of 47 shots he faced.

With the win, Chatham holds a 4-point lead over second place Leamington in the GOJHL’s Western Conference. Leamington beat St. Mary’s 6-2 Thursday to keep pace.

Chatham has six regular season games remaining. They will travel to Lambton Shores Saturday to face the surging Predators who picked up a huge 9-2 win over London earlier this week in a battle for their playoff lives.
