Wheatley Survives Canadiens Comeback, Take Game One

The Belle River Canadiens tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Wheatley Sharks held on for a 4-3 victory.

Wheatley made the score 4-2 on a goal by Brett Babkirk at 18:51 in the second period, and Belle River got as close as 4-3 when Mike Ditty scored 45 seconds into the third period.

The win gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Wheatley was paced on offense by Babkirk and Riley Babkirk, who combined for six points. Babkirk grabbed one goal and two assists and Babkirk also notched one goal and two assists.

The Sharks’ offense rang up 36 shots on the Canadiens’ net.

Wheatley also got points from Babkirk, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Wheatley also got a goal from Brian Johnson as well. Other players who recorded assists for Wheatley were Brendon Anger, who had one.

James Shelton also scored for Belle River. In addition, Belle River received assists from Jordan Taylor, Branden Larocque, Donnovan Plummer, Chris DiNatale, and Richard Dunning, who contributed one a piece.

Marc Tremblay rejected 19 shots on goal for Wheatley. The Sharks incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Zakk Olvin recorded 32 saves for Belle River. The Canadiens incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
