Sharks Sink, Down By Two Games
The Essex 73s again proved to be too much for the Wheatley Sharks Wednesday night as Essex sank the Sharks 5-2, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the Great Lakes Junior C final.
The trio of Jordan Brohman, Alex Garon, and Corey Beaulieu had a strong first period for the Essex 73s. Brohman scored to open the period, with Garon and Beaulieu assisting. Garon then scored to put Essex up 2-0, with Beaulieu and Brohman assisting.
On the powerplay, Wheatley cut the Essex lead in half before the first frame was over as Brendon Anger struck for the Sharks, with assists coming from Riley Babkirk and Kevin Sawatzky.
Following a scoreless second period, Garon scored a shorthanded marker to open the third, handing Wheatley what seemed to be a death blow. After Brian Johnson scored for Wheatley on the same powerplay, rejuvenating the team, Daniel McIntyre scored unassisted only minutes later to again put Essex up by two.
With the clock winding down, former Chatham Maroons forward Marco Canzoneri scored an empty net goal to secure the win.
Wheatley only managed to fire 18 shots on Essex goalie Trevor Wheaton in the loss.
A crucial game three will get underway Friday at 7:00pm in Essex.
