Golf Tournament Being Held in Honour of Cram

A group of former Wallaceburg District Secondary School students are set to hit the links this summer in honour of a fallen friend, teammate, and leader.

The Tartan Alumni Fund (TAF), a registered charity founded in 2007, has booked Baldoon Golf Course for June 15th in order to hold their third fundraising golf tournament. The money raised goes towards the groups scholarship, given out annually at the WDSS commencement.

The group of 15 plus members will have heavy hearts as they put on their golfing shoes and fundraising hats… as they are missing one of their founding members.

Pete Cram, the former co-chair of the TAF, died on September 21, 2012, after injuries sustained in a tragic bicycling accident in Toronto.

He was 29.

“Pete was an integral part of the creation of our charity, but more importantly a tireless leader amongst our group of friends,” said Ron Thomson, director with TAF. “Losing Pete has hit us all hard, but we are hoping to maintain a sliver of his memory and legacy by holding this golf tournament in his honour.”

Pete’s legacy has lived on in many other ways as well. Upon his passing, many of his organs were successfully donated to people in need. His former school Western Technical in Toronto have dedicated a wing, near the football room where he coached, in honour of him. And two memorials held in Pete’s honour, helped the TAF eclipse one of their first goals – of attaining $10,000 in fundraising for their charity.

The Pete Cram Memorial Golf Tournament will be a shotgun start, scramble style tournament at Baldoon Golf Course on Saturday June 15th.

“We’ve held two tournaments in the past, with great success,” said Erik Mitchell, chair of the Pete Cram Memorial Golf Tournament. “It’s always a great time and the support we’ve received from the community through people signing up to play, to businesses that have donated time, money or gifts, we have been floored with the support.”

Cost is $70 per person, and teams are filling up quick.

Members of the TAF are actively seeking teams and sponsorship for the tournament.
