Port Lambton’s Brendan Johnston, a Wallaceburg student and Chatham-Kent Secondary School goalie, has been named to the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario’s Team for the first ever U16 OHL Gold Cup.

Replacing the Under 17 program, the U16 OHL Gold Cup will take place May 9 through May 12 in Kitchener, and features the best players from across Ontario.

“With the players now being named, you can sense the anticipation for the event to begin,” said Phillip McKee, Executive Director of the Ontario Hockey Federation. “We are expecting fast pace, great hockey at the Gold Cup and I’m confident the players who we just named will more than deliver that.”

The four day tournament will feature two teams from the GTHL and OMHA, and one each from the Alliance, ODHA, NOHA, and HNO.

The top 68 players from this selection tournament will attend the final Team Ontario Under 17 camp.

Johnston, a fifth round draft choice of the Windsor Spitfires in the 2013 OHL Priority Draft, 97th overall.

Johnston picked up 6 of his team’s 8 regular season wins this season, posting a solid 0.916 save percentage and a 2.36 goals against average. Johnston’s save percentage was tied for second in the Alliance AAA league among starting goaltenders this season.

He was also one of 16 goalies who attended the annual OHL Combine in Toronto prior to the draft.

Johnston was the only Chatham-Kent Cyclones player chosen to represent the Alliance, however former Cyclone, and first overall OHL selection Travis Konecny was also named to the team.
