Lancers Lose in Golden Boot Final

The Ursuline College Lancers Senior girls rugby team lost in the final of the Brantford Golden Boot tournament Thursday.

In their opening game, against Kitchener Collegiate Institute, the Lancers took a convincing 29-0 win. Scoring for the UCC Lancers were Megan Mulhern, Sydnee Nolan, Gabrielle Desbiens, Delaney Taylor and Jessica Pickering. Gabrielle Desbiens also kicked two converts.

Facing Applewood in their second game, the Lancers clawed out a tight 12-10 victory. Hannah Cartier and Gabrielle Desbiens scored tries in the game, which was tied at the end of regulation and went to kicks. Both teams missed their first attempt and then on the second attempt, Gabrielle Desbiens won the game for UCC.

Facing an undefeated Brantford Collegiate Institute, who hadn’t allowed a try against in the tournament, UCC lost the championship final 41-0. BCI shut out all their opponents, beating Sherwood 40-0, and Gerogetown 29-0.

In the Junior side of the tournament, UCC’s Junior squad lost in the bronze medal game. The girls opened the tournament with a 34-0 win over Sherwood. Tries were scored by Brooke Bechard, Avery Hughston with two, Metteha Dielman, Kiria Robinson, and Mackenzie Desbiens. Brooke Bechard also kicked two converts.

Paris then shut out the UCC Juniors 17-0, which sent the young squad to the Bronze Medal game.

Playing for the bronze against a tough North Park Collegiate team, Kiara Robinson scored the lone try for UCC in a 12-5 loss.
