OFSAA Stays With Four Classification System

Chatham-Kent’s high schools will continue to compete with schools of a similar size next year after a decision by OFSAA this week.

It had been proposed to move from a four classification system of A, AA, AAA, AAAA, due to shrinking enrollment numbers in many regions, however OFSAA voted to maintain the current system. The change would have also offered several schools, including larger institutions such as CKSS and UCC more opponents locally, rather than giving these schools a free bye through Kent to SWOSSAA competition.

Under the proposed change, many A schools would have been forced to play traditionally AA schools, while AAA and AAAA schools would have also been bundled in most situations.

This means schools will continue to play opponents of a similar size, rather than being bundled into a larger pool of opponents.

The decision will not impact league play locally, and will allow the playoff format for how teams advance from KCSSAA to SWOSSAA and OFSAA, to remain unchanged.
