CKXS Sports Briefs: May 6, 2013
The Wallaceburg Red Devils split two games over the weekend. Wallaceburg topped London 15-13 yesterday for their first win of the year. Jordan Durston led the way with 12 points, including 4 goals and 8 assists. The Red Devils fell to Spartan 10-9 in a close one on Saturday.
World Hockey Championships
It wasn’t the best result fro TJ Brodie and his Canadian teammates yesterday. Team Canada lost to Switzerland 3-2 in a shootout. Matt Read and Andrew Ladd scored for Canada in regulation. Brodie logged 12 minutes of ice time, and had a minus 1 rating. Brodie played 12 minutes in a 3-1 win over Denmark, his first wearing his countries sweater. Canada plays Norway tomorrow.
OHL
The London Knights evened up their championship series with the Barrie Colts, with a 4-1 win yesterday. Wallaceburg’s Seth Griffith was the game’s first star, scoring two goals and adding an assist in the win. Game 3 in tonight in Barrie.
Stanley Cup Playoffs
Pittsburgh 5 at 4 NY Islanders (OT) – Chris Kunitz scored his second power-play goal of the game 8:34 into overtime, off a pass from Sidney Crosby. The Pens lead 2-1.
Chicago 2 at 3 Minnesota (OT) -Jason Zuckers scored the OT winner. The Hawks lead 2-1.
Montreal 1 at 6 Ottawa – The Sens lead 2-1.
Vancouver 2 at 5 San Jose – The Sharks lead 3-0.
Racing news
Veteran drivers Jim Dale Jr. of Shrewsbury and Steve Shaw of Merlin opened the 2013 stock car racing season at South Buxton Raceway wins in front a large opening night crowd Saturday. Dale Jr. won the Schinkels Gourmet Meats UMP Modified feature while Shaw took the checkered flag in the Windride Transportation Sport Stocks. Dover Centre’s Tyler Lozon was second and Wallaceburg’s Willy Vyse third in the Sport Stocks feature. Leamington’s Justin Coulter won the UMP Late Model feature and Cottam’s Denis DeSerrano took the Tirecraft Mini-Mod feature.
NBA Playoffs
Memphis 91 at 93 Oklahoma City – Thunder 1-0.
Indiana 102 at 95 New York – Pacers 1-0.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers completed the sweep over the Houston Astros with a 9-0 victory. Justin Verlander picked up the win. Prince Fielder, Omar Infante, Andy Dirks and Brayan Pena all homered.
The Jays topped Seattle 10-2. Brandon Morrow got the win and Mark DeRosa and Melky Cabrera both homered.
