Johnston Solid at OHL Gold Cup

Port Lambton’s Brendan Johnston was solid between the pipes this weekend at the OHL Gold Cup in Kitchener.

Representing Team Alliance, the Wallaceburg District Secondary School student, and Chatham-Kent Cyclones goaltender posted impressive numbers while seeing action in three games, including Player of the Game honours.

In his first game against the Northern Ontario Hockey Association Team, Johnston faced 20 shots, and made 19 saves in a 5-1 win.

Facing the eventual OHL Gold Cup champion Ottawa District Hockey Association Team in his next start, Johnston stopped 23 of 24 shots in a nailbiter 1-0 loss. For his performance in the loss, Johnston was named the Player of the Game.

Johnston also saw time in a 3-2 win over Team GTHL Red in the Silver Game. Johnston was replaced by Justin Fazio midway through the game, with Team Alliance picking up the shootout win.

Overall, Johnston, who was drafted by the Windsor Spitfires in the 5th round of this year’s OHL Priority Selection Draft, posted an incredible 1.62 GAA and 0.933 save percentage.

Team Alliance finished atop the OHL Gold Cup Group B standings with a 3-1-0-1 record
