The Bantam Chatham-Kent Cougars made the long bus trip early Saturday morning to the Barrie Sports Complex to face off against the Huronia Stallions.

Huronia, who was coming off a bye week and sitting undefeated at 1-0 looked to keep their record clean verses the Chatham-Kent Cougars 1-1 coming off a loss to Brantford.

The first half was a close defensive game as Chatham edged out Huronia 7-0 at halftime. However, the second half was a different story as the Cougars seemed to have adjusted to Huronia’s defense and began opening up offensively to score a total of 37 points. The Cougars’ defense put up their first shutout as Huronia’s only points came off a 71 yard kick return. The Cougars came out victorious rebounding with a 37-6 win to move their record to 2-1 for the season.

Top performers for the game offensively were Chris Vercauteren as he rushed for 155 yards on 11 carries for 3 touchdowns. Both quarterbacks also put in strong performances as Wyatt Barnes and Jarret Millard each passed for a touchdown to receivers James Muhareem and Spencer Allen.

Brad Wild carried the ball 8 times for 122 yards, led the defense with 6 tackles and 2 sacks, was 4 for 5 on extra points and even added a 19 yard field goal.

Defensive standouts were Carter Wright in his first game on defense having 6 tackles and knocking down 1 pass, while David Nethersole II and David LeClair each had 1 interception and 2 tackles, and Brendan Marr had 3 tackles.

The Cougars face the Twin City Predators in Kitchener-Waterloo on June 15.
