Cougars Pick Up Two Wins
A gutsy effort on offence was lead by quarterback Kelton Evans going 11-for-16 for 238 yards with 3 TDs and an interception. A strong offensive day was also had by running back Marc Kellet of Wallaceburg who rushed for 38 yards and a TD, and also caught 4 passes for 107 yards and a TD. Liberty Rountree also contributed offensively with 58 yards and a TD, while Jake Anderson also caught a TD pass with 55 yards receiving. Trevor Niven kicked a 30-yard field goal to round out Chatham-Kent’s scoring.
The JV Cougars defence picked off Forest City 6 times. The defence was lead by Alex Formosa who had 2 interceptions and also topped all Cougars tacklers with 7. Zach Kaniecki had 7 tackles and an interception, while Jacob Brush, Trevor Niven, and Ricky O’Rourke also had picks.
The Junior Varsity Chatham-Kent Cougars have a bye week this week and the play the Sarnia Sturgeon the following week at home.
The Peewee Chatham-Kent Cougars won their final home game of the season 31-0 facing the Sarnia Sturgeons. The defense played their best game of the year to post the shutout. Lucas Doyle was a laeader with 8 tackles and an interception. Connor Wright made 6 tackles, while Tanner Hoorelbeck recovered 2 fumbles, and Ethan Jordan had 1 interception. The offense was led by an outstanding effort from Julian Ferrell at quarterback. Ferrell rushed for 2 TDs and also passed for 3 touchdowns. Ben Barnard, Trenton Amaro and Kueng-Die Jung each had 1 receiving TD.
Facing the Forest City Thunderbirds, the Bantam Chatham-Kent Cougars, had a pivotal game in regards to who would get the advantage at the 5th place spot in the division and a run at the playoffs. The game seemed to get out of hand quickly as Forest City jumped to a 13-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. However, Chatham made some defensive adjustments and kept the Thunderbirds scoreless for the 2nd. The Cougars scored on the last play of the first half on a 43-yard run by Brad Wild, who also converted the extra point to bring the score to 13-7. As the game neared the 4th quarter, the deep bench of Forest City seemed to show as the Cougars began to tire in the heat and gave up a 70 yard punt return to make the game 20-7. At this point it seemed the Chatham-Kent Cougars had lost faith and ended up losing the game 33-7.
The Bantam Cougars have been plagued by injuries the past few weeks and it showed having 8 guys out. Chatham-Kent now has a bye week, which will give their team a chance to heal before playing a tough final 3 games as they face the Sarnia Sturgeon (3-1) at home July 7th, the Niagara Storm (0-4) in Niagara July 13th, and finish the season off at home against the Burlington Stampeders (5-0) who are also last year’s defending champions.
