Senior Cougars Hunt Bison For First Win
In the first week of the season, the Chatham-Kent Cougars Senior Varsity football team got off to a slow start and lost a tough game to a very good Hamilton Hurricane team. After a great week of practice and some key adjustments, the Cougars roared back for their home opener, defeating the Brantford Bison this Saturday, 44-7.
Playing short handed with a couple of key starters out, the Cougars came out firing on their first series when the defense came out and caused two negative yardage plays for Brantford. After the punt on the first play of scrimmage, quarterback Alex Goldoni hooked up with Ben Bartlett for a 50 yard touchdown pass.
Before the first quarter expired, the Cougars would drive the field two more times with Max Fantuz punching in two hard earned touchdown runs for a 19-0 lead. Early in the second quarter the Cougars would drive again and have to settle for one point on the rouge.
The Cougars started the second half the way they started the first with a couple solid defensive series’ and huge hits from Carter Wood and Cam Rylett Ward. When the offense returned to the field, Goldoni hooked up with Gabe Gagner for a 25 yard touchdown strike and a two point conversion by Ben Bartlett on a beautifully executed end around play. The defense also jumped in on the scoring by forcing the Bisons deep and into a safety.
With a 37-7 lead, the Cougars put the finishing touches on the game when Deion List and the Cougars offense drove the field from the 5 yard line with a methodical run attack. List finished the drive with a 10 yard touchdown plunge.
With the win, the Cougars gained some positive momentum for their next big challenge next week against Guelph.
