Young Cougars Drop Two
The Peewee Cougars fell at home on Sunday at the hands of the Stampeders 51-28, to even there record at 1-1.
The offense was once again led by Jonathan Cartier, last week’s Enviro Clean Cougar of the Week, who ran for 213 yards on 16 rushes, scoring 3 touchdowns. Ben Barnard also turned in a strong performance gaining 103 yards on 9 rushes and 1 TD.
Cameron Creechan was 2 for 3 on converts and Burlington conceded a safety to round out the Cougars scoring.
The defense was led by Lucas Doyle who made 8 tackles. Creechan had 7 tackles, while Trey Postma and Connor Wright each had 5.
The Junior Varsity Cougars played the Brantford Bison in their opening game of the 2013 season, endeding up on the wrong side of a 42-12 game. Quarterback Nolan Ball went 14 for 19, compiling 101 yards while connecting with ten different receivers. QB Kelton Evans was 4 for 6, for 28 yards and a TD. Catching the TD pass and leading the team in receiving was WR Liberty Rountree.
Eric Penney and Nate Whittal also caught multiple passes. Leading rushers were Alex Ronyson and Jacob Broad with 28 yards apiece. Sinjin Rountree also chipped in a rushing touchdown on a 15 yard run.
Leading tacklers on defence were Alex Formosa with 6, and Nate Whittal, Nate Kreiger and Michael Ouellette adding 4 tackles each. Kenny Levesque, Dorian Payne and Whittal each recovered fumbles. Trevor Niven had a strong day punting for a 37 yard average.
The JV Cougars next action is Saturday when they travel to The University of Guelph and take on the Guelph Bears.
