Sting Win Fourth Straight, Advance to Cup Semis
The Wallaceburg Sting have really begun to buzz. After opening the season winless in their first 6 games,
the Wallaceburg Sting have rattled off 4 consecutive victories.
In league play, on July 12, the Wallaceburg Sting defeated the London Portuguese by a 4-1 margin. Phil
Nywening led the way with two goals, while Kyle Allaer and Paul Craven chipped in with singles.
The Sting next played in a Premier Cup quarter-final match versus Sarnia FC. The Sting marched into the half with a 1-0 lead thanks to a converted penalty kick by Kurtis Lubbers, before Sarnia tied it up in the game’s second half. After 90 minutes the game was knotted at one-apiece, forcing extra time. Two, fifteen minute halves were then played, with no change in the score.
The game was then decided by penalty kicks – each team selecting 5 shooters – though not all turned out necessary. Sting keeper, Sam Youlton, known for his penalty kick prowess, lived up to his billing in goal. Youlton, stopped the first three Sarnia shooters, before he, himself, as Wallaceburg’s fourth shooter, buried the game-winning tally. Other Sting scorers in penalty kicks were Phil Nywening and Colin McArthur .
With the win, the Sting will play their semi-final match on Sunday, July 28 in Strathroy vs. London Croatia. They will resume league play on Thursday, August 1, travelling to London to take on AEK.
This is a very exciting team to watch! They won their cup semi, too, which means they go to the premier cup final on August 29th. Go Sting!
