Tilbury’s Norg Medals Three Times At International Children’s Games
Tilbury swimming Aaron Norg grabbed some significant hardware at the International Children’s Games in Windsor over the weekend. The 47th Children’s Games drew over 1,500 athletes from 30 countries to compete.
Norg, who is 15-years-old, was competing as a member of the Windsor Essex Swim Team, and won three silver medals over the weekend events, taking silver in the 50m backstroke, 50m freestyle, and 100m freestyle.
Friday, Norg, who also has a silver from the Canadian Age-Group Championships and a gold and silver from the Ontario Championships this summer, was second in the 50m backstroke final in 28.20 seconds. The finish was a personal best for the Tilbury swimmer, who is transferring from Tilbury District High Schhol to Maranatha Christian Academy in Windsor this coming September.
He was also second, taking home another silver, in the 50m freestyle final, touching the wall in 24.71 seconds. Swimmers from Mexico and Chinese Taipei topped Norg in the races.
Norg also helped the Windsor-Essex team to a fifth place finish in the 400 medley relay. Saturday, Norg finished 4th in the 100m backstroke, touching in 1:02.61.
In the 100m freestyle preliminary races, Norg set the tone for all athletes, as the top qualifier with a time of 54.20. He swims the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke Saturday. In the final, China’s Xiaochen Li edged Norg by 0.12 seconds, giving Norg his third silver of the Games.
Chatham’s Quinn Canella, a Chatham-Kent Secondary School student, was the second fastest qualifier in the boys 1500m race Friday, but fell to fourth in the final Saturday, crossing the finish line in 4:16.80.
Sunday in the 4×100 relay, Canella helped Canada (Windsor-Essex), to a fifth place finish with a time of 46.56.
