Admirals Hook Sharks For First Ever Win
To open the first period, Wheatley looked to be in control scoring twice. Brett Bowman and Cale Phibbs each scored goals in the first two minutes of the game, before the Amherstburg Admirals were able to calm down.
Answering the age old trivia question, who scored the first goal in Amherstburg Admirals history, was Josh Lafromboise who tallied midway through the opening period to cut Wheatley’s lead to 2-1. Former Chatham-Kent Cyclones players Blake Rutckyj, who played Junior B last season for the LaSalle Vipers then tied the game scoring for Amherstburg on the powerplay. Ryan Jones would then score again for Amherstburg to give the Admirals their first franchise lead.
In the second, Derek Haskell, who came over from the Belle River Canadiens, scored for Wheatley to knot the game at three. Moments later however, Chad Copeland, who played one game last season with the Wheatley Sharks, scored for the Admirals. The trading of goals continued as the period came to a close, with Austin Fontaine scoring for the Sharks.
The third period, Dan Matoski scored a shorthanded marker less than two minutes into the frame, a goal that would stand as the game winner. Copeland would later score his second of the game as an insurance marker.
After being the last team to open the Great Lakes Junior C season, the Wheatley Sharks are now off for another week before hosting the Mooretown Flags Monday, September 23. Amherstburg hosts Belle River Sunday September 22.
