Kings Edge Flags In Season Opener

Dresden-Kings-1The Dresden Kings held off a late charge by the Mooretown Flags Friday night to win their home and season opening game of the 2013-2014 Great Lakes Junior C season.

After a scoreless first period during which Dresden goalie Brent Paxton made 21 saves, Thamesville’s Taylor Sisson, who’s in his third season with the Dresden Jr. Kings, scored the opening goal of the game. Macks Holmes and Dylan Mertz had assists.

Heading into the third period with a 1-0 lead, Paxton was forced to turn away a barrage of shots, stopping 56 in total in the game. Midway through the third, the line of Sisson, Mertz, and Holmes would strike again for the Kings, as Macks Holmes scored his first of the season, with Mertz and Sisson assisting, putting Dresden up 2-0.

Only minutes later, Graham Smyth would score for the Kings, assisted by Alex Ritchie and Jesse Allen to give the Kings a 3-0 lead with less than seven minutes remaining.

Mooretown however, was not done as they continued to pepper Paxton. Eventually, Brett Thomspson, who split last season between between Listowel and Lambton Shores Junior B, scored for the Flags. Sam Jasmin, who was the Wallaceburg Lakers leading scorer last season picked up an assist on the play. After Spencer Bronzi scored for the Flags, cutting the Kings’ lead to 3-2, Paxton shut the door for the final minutes, helping Dresden edge Mooretown for their first win of the season.
