Tartans, Lancers Take Football Openers
After back-to-back Kent Senior Football championships, the Wallaceburg Tartans continued winning, albeit in a new season, defeating the John McGregor Panther 30-6 in the Kent Senior Football opener Friday.
Marc Kellett paced the Wallaceburg offense, running the ball 18 times for 164-yards. The grade 11 Wallaceburg student scored two touchdowns, a 10-yard run in the first quarter, and a 1-yard goaline run in the second quarter.
Brayden Fischer and Simon Yazbeck had the other touchdowns for Wallacburg in the victory. Fischer also had 132 rushing yards, and 31 passing yards on the day.
In the other Kent Football game, the UCC Lancers blanked the Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks 31-0 under the lights at CKSS.
Next week, girls basketball gets underway with UCC hosting JMSS and CKSS hosting WDSS Wednesday. In football action, John McGregor plays UCC Saturday as a part of the annual Red Feather celebrations, which will also include a variety of other sporting activities.
