Dresden’s Wes Cunningham has been named the assistant captain of the ECHL’s Bakersfield Condors. The ECHL veteran, spent last season overseas in Norway, but suited up for the first time on North American soil this year Friday in the Condors’ opener.

“It was a great experience, I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Cunningham told Bakersfield Condors UNLEASHED about his time in Europe, “but I still missed the North American style of hockey, so I had to come back and give it another go, and it looked like Bakersfield was the best option for me.”

In 2011-2012, Cunningham played 5 games for the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, and also put in 56 games, scoring 30 points with the ECHL’s Greenville Road Warriors.

2013-2014 will be Cunningham’s fifth season in the ECHL. He’s played with the Elmira Jackals and Greenville, before signing with Bakersfield this off season, and was an ECHL First Team All-Star in 2010-2011.

In their opener, the Condors lost 2-1 in a shootout to the Colorado Eagles.

Saturday, Cunningham and the Condors take on the Ontario Reign.
