Maroons Breast Cancer Awareness Night A Huge Success
The Chatham Maroons annual “Breast Cancer Awareness Night” held Sunday was a huge success according to Karen Szekesy of the Maroons.
“The $3000.00 raised from the auction of the ‘pink game jerseys’ and a donation from the Chatham Maroons Hockey Club will be shared by The Breast Buddies and by the Canadian Cancer Society, Chatham-Kent unit,” said Szekesy.
The special ‘pink’ jerseys were donated by Bill & Karen Szekesy and Hogan’s Printing.
Sixteen members of The Breast Buddies were in attendance for a special pre-game ceremony. They are a group of breast cancer survivors who have taken up dragon boat racing. It is their mission to promote awareness of a quality of life after a diagnosis of breast cancer.
Also participating in the pre-game ceremony was Michael Verboom’s aunt, Jeltje Cudney and Trevor Richardson’s mother, Dyana Richardson, both who are breast cancer survivors.
On the scoresheet, the Chatham Maroons also didn’t disappoint, picking up a valuable two points against the Leamington Flyers, winning 3-2.
Leamington has sat ahead of the Maroons in the standings all season, but with Chatham’s new additions, Leamington couldn’t match the Maroons. Kyle Brothers had two goals and an assist in the win, while Adam Arseneault assisted on both of Brothers’ goals and scored one of his own.
Chatham and Leamington will play a rematch Thursday in Leamington.
