Lakers Fall Under New Coach
The Wallaceburg Lakers played their first game under new head coach Ken Shine Thursday night, as they hosted the Alvinston Flyers at Walpole Island.
Despite the changes to Wallaceburg’s management, the Lakers dropped their 16th game of the season, losing 5-2.
Karsten Berg and Dylan Lightfoot got the Alvinston Flyers out to a 2-0 lead before Wallaceburg scored their first of the game. Justin Whitson scored, with assists going to Mike Kindarachuk and Ryan Gruszka midway through the second period to break Wallaceburg’s goose egg.
After Alvinston scored again, Wallaceburg pulled within one early in the third off an Evan Weidenbach goal. Whitson and Jeff Morey picked up assists.
Wallaceburg however, wouldn’t score again, as the Flyers added an insurance marker and empty netter to close off the game.
As a sign the Lakers are improving defensively, goaltender Joel Sowinski faced one of his lowest shot totals of the year, stopping 28 of 32 shots he faced.
Wallaceburg plays Dresden Friday and Amherstburg Saturday.
