Lakers Shock 73s For Big Win

Most of Wallaceburg Memorial Arena may have been in shock when the final buzzer rang and the Wallaceburg Lakers skated off the ice with a 5-3 win over the previously undefeated in regulation Essex 73s. One man however, was simply shell shocked after facing 65 shots in the win.

Wallaceburg netminder Joel Sowinski turned away 62 shots in the win, including 27 in the third period, to secure the win for the Wallaceburg Lakers.

Evan Weidenbach scored twice for the Wallaceburg Lakers in the win, and added an assist, while Ryan Gruszka had a goal and two assists. Weidenbach’s marker six minutes into the third period proved to be the gamer winner for the Lakers, who now have two wins this season.

Scott Lubbers scored a second period powerplay goal, and Justin Whitson put away an empty netter with the score sitting at 4-3 late in the third.

With the win, Wallaceburg imrpoves to 2-20-0-0 while Essex falls to 18-1-1-1 through the first half of the season.

Wallaceburg now has a full week off to rest, before they host the Blenheim Blades next Wednesday.
