Tough Weekend For Local Junior Teams
It was a weekend to forget for a few local Junior hockey teams. Entering the weekend with high hopes, Chatham-Kent’s Junior hockey teams struggled to put up wins.
At the Junior B level, the Chatham Maroons went 0-2, losing to the last place St. Marys Lincolns 4-3, and to the London Nationals 5-4. Kyle Brothers continued his torrid scoring pace, collecting four points in Sunday’s loss to London, while Adam Arseneault scored in both games.
The Wallaceburg Lakers opened the weekend with a new coach, and new aspirations, but ended their weekend 0-3, with losses to Alvinston, Dresden, and Amherstburg. Wallaceburg has shown signs of staying with their opponents however, as they took a lead against Amherstburg before falling 6-5. Belle River resident Ryan Gruszka continues to lead the team in scoring.
After Dresden beat Wallaceburg Friday, they also dropped their second game of the weekend, losing to the red hot Alvinston Flyers 7-4. Alvinston was able to round out their winning weekend by coming back to beat the Blenheim Blades 4-3 in overtime. Kirk McKillop, Cam Aitken, and Dylan Muzzatti scored for Blenheim in the loss.
Finally, the Wheatley Sharks were the only team to enjoy success this weekend, as they beat the Belle River Canadiens 4-3 Friday, before edging the Amherstburg Admirals 3-2 in overtime Sunday. Brett Babkirk scored twice for Wheatley, including in overtime in their win over Amherstburg.
