Maroons Holding Alumni “Giveaway” Night
The Chatham Maroon Alumni “Giveaway” will be held Sunday, December 8th when the Maroons host the St. Thomas Stars.
The first 175 children ages 5 to 12 will receive a special gift, compliments of the Maroon Alumni.
The Chatham Maroon Alumni Association was formed in 1995 with the vision of “Preserving the Past and Promoting the Future of the Chatham Junior Maroon Hockey Club.” The Alumni Association would like to see every Maroon player continue his education in a post secondary school program after graduation from high school. The “Blades For Grades” scholarship program was established in 2000, so that Junior Maroon players could continue to be successful in all aspects of their lives. The source of funds to support this program is generated by the Annual Maroon Alumni Golf Tournament.
After the first three years, the Scholarship Committee was aware that with post secondary cost escalating and students trying to keep pace, they raised the monetary value of the scholarship from $500 to $750. For example then, if a current Maroon player who has played three years for the Maroons and attends a Canadian college or university would be eligible for three payments of $750. To this date Maroon Alumni Association has fulfilled this commitment to the players with an amount of over $71,000 scholarship dollars.
In October of 2003, the first “Chatham Maroons Alumni Heart and Soul Wall of Fame” was held. This wall recognizes the many dedicated volunteers who, over the years, have put their hearts and souls into their commitment of time, professional skills or homes to the Maroon players and the club. The wall, located on the south end of the arena, is a reminder to all the fans of the pride the Chatham-Kent community has for their Maroon teams and players.
The Alumni Association also established “The Legends On Ice Showcases” which are located on the upper east side of Memorial Arena. These beautiful cases contain many Maroon hockey pictures and memorabilia from past teams and players.
With such a strong community commitment towards the team the Alumni Association was set up, not only for former players, but also includes many loyal fans. If you would be interested in becoming an alumni member be sure to check our website at www.chathammaroonalumni.com for sign up information. New members are always welcomed and the site is also a great place to get information on the “HEART AND SOUL WALL OF FAME”, the “BLADES FOR GRADES” program as well as pictures, the golf tournament and membership information. The Alumni Association thanks you for your support.
