Alena Fiala is a 20-year-old hockey player from Blenheim, Ontario, who currently plays NCAA hockey for the Finlandia University Lions women’s hockey team.

A graduate of Ursuline College Chatham, Fiala used the Banff Hockey Academy as a stepping stone to her University career. Studying criminal justice, the Chatham Outlaws alumni is in her sophmore season of NCAA Division III hockey.

Below are Alena Fiala’s answers to CKSN’s Five Questions:

1. What is your career sports highlight/top memory?

Scoring my first NCAA goal.

2. Who is your favourite professional sports team and athlete?

The Detroit Red Wings and Steve Yzerman.

3. If you could achieve one thing/goal in sports, what would it be?

Well since I already achieved my sports goal of playing College Hockey, now it would have to be winning the league (NCHA) championship.

4. Who has been your biggest sports influence and why?

I think my biggest influence would have to be my dad. He’s the one who first taught me how to skate and how to play hockey. He always taught me to keep my head up and even when you get knocked down to get back up. He taught me more about the mental side of the game and hockey smarts. He taught me to always do my best.

5. What do you love most about playing sports?

There’s so much that I love about playing sports. I love the friendships I’ve made and the places that sports, especially hockey, have brought me. I love that adrenaline feeling you get when you score or block a shot or take someone out. I love the after celebrations when you score and the feeling when your teammates are hugging you and hitting you on the back. I love hearing my parents tell me they’re proud of me. Most of all though I just simply love the sport, it’s an escape. I love hockey it’s been my life since I was four and the day I have to officially hang up my skates will be heart breaking.

Five Questions is a feature on the Chatham-Kent Sports Network. We’ll ask athletes from across Chatham-Kent Five Questions, and post their answers every week.
